Tropical gardens
A tropical garden features tropical plants and requires good rainfall or a decent irrigation or sprinkler system for watering. These gardens typically need fertilizer and heavy mulching.
Tropical gardens are no longer exclusive to tropical areas. These colourful gardens are becoming very popular and many gardeners in colder climates are adopting the tropical garden design, which is possible through careful choice of plants and flowers.
Lush and healthy tropical plants, such as dipladenias, Boston ferns and banana plants, will be arriving at garden centres for the start of the Spring gardening season. Please use our garden centre locator at the bottom of this page to search for plants arriving in your region.
These tropicals are perfect for patio containers or garden beds which would last the season from mid-May to mid-October, providing beautiful bright blooms and lush foliage.
The mandevilla and dipladenia hybrids are part of a new trend to incorporate tropical plants in flower beds, hanging plants and patio containers. Known for their climbing or trailing properties, these plants produce bright flowers surrounded by eye-catching, glossy foliage, and stay true to their vibrant colours.
As they are natural climbers, the Dipladenias and Mandevillas can be used with trellises or supporting plants in the garden landscape. They like warmth and sunny exposure, but will also grow at a slower pace in cooler (15-18C) temperatures. Though they enjoy high light, there should be partial shade during the day. Like all plants, they need sufficient watering to encourage growth. If the leaves start to fall, they’re too dry. Pinching is encouraged to improve branching.
