Plants that grow low to the ground, and spread
as they grow are called groundcover. There
are many fabulous reasons to grow groundcover.
Groundcover plant varieties range from shade-lovers
to sun lovers, thriving under trees or where
little else would grow.
Unlike lawn, which requires mowing and
fertilizing, ground cover is maintenance
free. Many people plant ground cover in
place of lawn in order to reduce the harmful
effects of pesticides and pollution created
by the lawnmower. Groundcover also grows
well on steep slopes, and many types are
drought tolerant.
Groundcover plants come in many different
shades of green, some types also produce
flowers like vinca, and there are many beautiful
textures that add interest to the landscape.
