Priority
#1
Healthy plants!
People don’t like to buy dead plants,
or sick-looking plants. So your first priority
in the garden center should be to keep plants
healthy from the day they arrive at your
store. Here are some quick tips:
Water
- Water daily - dry plants die very fast
- Water evenly so all plants get nourished
- Water in the morning so the water is
not evaporated by the sun as quickly
- Water gently to avoid damaging the blooms,
or foliage
- Singing while you water can make the
task go faster
Water plants in the
morning every day. Be gentle, and water
evenly to ensure every plant gets a good
drink.
Sunlight
Make sure plants that like sun get exposed
to sun - it only takes a day or two of no
sunlight to kill sun-loving plants
Appearance
Remove brown leaves, and dead blooms to
keep plants healthy and attractive for purchase

Merchandising

Organizing by color
helps gardeners find what they want, and
mix and match colors more easily.
Sell more faster with a great display. Here
are some tips:
- Organize plants by color to make a high
impact display, and help gardeners find
what they need and see selection easily
- Put up bench cards with information
and pricing – customers get frustrated
quickly without this
- Erect provided point-of-purchase material
to attract attention and promote what
you sell
- Move plants around to keep displays
neat and tidy
- Keep aisles clear of debris so carts
can get through easily
Give Customers
Ideas!
- Merchandise Awesome Accents with popular
color annuals, along with interesting
containers, and potting soil to make for
one-stop shopping
- Plant “Sun”, “Part
Sun”, and “Shade” containers
using Fernlea recipe ideas, then make
the recipe available in-store.
- Be creative and make themed displays
by color combinations - like Patriotic
Displays of red, white and blue flowers.
Or red and white for Canada.
- Use tiered displays to add interest
to open areas, putting larger plants on
the bottom shelf, and smaller annuals
on the top.
- Give customers reasons to try new plants -
- “Plant Gorgeous Grasses on
steep slopes, and say goodbye to barren
lawn”
- “Fabulous Ferns are also ideal
for cut flower arrangements”
- “Plant groundcover in areas
you don’t want to mow lawn”
- “Plant BigShot Pansies now -
they are frost tolerant”
