Geraniums are a bit confusing! Most people
likely think of Geraniums like these:

This is what we call
a 'geranium' even though it is really a pelargonium
These are referred to as ‘zonal geraniums’.
Interestingly, what we call geraniums are
technically pelargoniums, but they belong
to the same family as true geraniums. Most
people plant zonal geraniums as a bedding
plant and treat it as an annual, planting
new ones each year.
Annual geraniums are very popular because
they have big, long lasting blooms, are available
in vibrant shades, have pretty foliage and
are easy to grow. They make an ideal container
plant. Ivy geraniums have a vine-style growing
habit making them perfect for containers and
hanging baskets. |

This is a true geranium- it's a hardy
perennial, most often grown from seed.

This Ivy Geranium has a nice trailing
habit, great for containers, and baskets.
